Nails are now available in a very wide variety of sizes, types and finishes. Whether you need greater holding power, corrosion resistance or good appearance, there is a nail which has the qualities wanted.

Finishes.

As a general guide, different finishes improve various qualities - for example

  • Phosphate improves holding power.
  • Nickel plating mild corrosion protection and bright shiny appearance where internal use demands good appearance.
  • Zinc plating (electro galvanizing) internal protection against corrosion, bright shiny appearance.
  • Cadmium plating, internal protection against corrosion, has bright shiny appearance. Cadmium is toxic, not to be used where food is prepared.
  • Cement coating (processed nails), improves holding power, and feeds more freely in various manufacturing processes.
  • Galvanized, hot dip galvanizing provides maximum protection against corrosion.

Metals and their uses.

Nails made from non-ferrous metals are also available. Since they can be considerably more expensive, their advantages must be balanced against the higher cost. Advantages and applications of some of these metals is as follows:

  • Brass - corrosion resistant, used mainly in interior finishing.
  • Copper - high corrosion resistance, used for marine applications.
  • Silicone bronze - high corrosion resistance and strength, mainly for marine use.
  • Monel metal - excellent corrosion resistance and strength, non-rust bright nickel appearance, most suitable for marine purposes.
  • Helical threaded nails

These provide considerably more holding power than plain shank nails. The nail turns as it is driven, cutting a thread as it goes and resisting any tendency to pull out. They are for use in all types of timber and particleboard. Threaded nails are used in many applications such as boat building, roof decking and fixing underlay sheets for vinyl floor coverings.

The following chart gives you a guide as to what nail to use for each particular job. It shows just a selection from the wide range of nails available, some of which are very specialized. You can have nails made to your specific requirements.
